Quilts

A quilt can be hand sewn, or it can be sewn on a machine. Some of my quilts were hand sewn. There is a cotton backing, and the material can be  new or it can be made of  old clothes.  The squares can be small as one inch or much bigger.  There are patterns that you can choose to make, or  you can just design a quilt. Most of mine were designed and the material was new.   Once you have the material, you cut the squares, and sew these together. Later a  cotton filler and a backing are added.  A hem is attached around the quilt’s edge. A quilt can take a while to finish.

I received a quilt every Christmas from my mother-in-law. She was a marvelous designer, and now I have the memory of her with me. The quilts remind me of an art experience. Mom chose many different fabric designs to color coordinate.  If the theme was purple, she chose white, pink, and different shades of purple,to blend through the quilt.  Each quilt was different, unique and colorful.

One quilt I was given as a wedding gift after we had been married a short time.  It had embroidered designs sown with green embroidery threads on a white background.  Although it is worn and ragged after many years of wear, I still take it out to look at it and put it back on the shelf.

After her death in February 1998 , we visited with the family at Christmas. One day my sister-in-law reached into her closet, high on the top shelf .  She gave me a package.  Mom had intended on giving me this for Christmas.  It was the most beautiful quilt of all.  It had scalloped borders and a happy theme of pastel colors.  This was quite a surprise.

My family thinks about Mom Craft every time we get the quilts out. We use them every winter and they are quite warm.  They are still a wonderful treasure and they still trigger fond memories of her.
